Chapter Eleven

Angus recognized the color rising in Reggie’s cheeks. If he wasn’t hungry and in need of a shower, he might consider letting the battle between Will’s fiancée and Reggie continue. But he was getting irritated with the woman’s persistence and the conversation had long since reached its limit.

“Ms. Kuntz, I believe Reggie has stated her desire not to sell. Now excuse us while we go clean up.” He hooked Reggie’s elbow and led her past Lillian and Will toward the back of the house.

“Don’t worry about us,” Lillian said airily. “Will was just going to show me the wine cellar.”

“Reggie, you don’t mind if we find a bottle of champagne to celebrate our engagement, do you?” Will asked.

Reggie dug her feet in, resisting Angus’s attempt to get her out of striking range of William’s fiancée. As Angus hustled her out of the kitchen, she muttered, “I don’t mind William taking a bottle, but I’ll be damned if I let that witch—”

Leaning close to her ear so that only she would hear, Angus whispered, “Scrambled eggs, bacon and biscuits.”

A loud rumble from her belly indicated he’d made his point.

Jo found Reggie and Angus in the hallway. “I’ve filled the bath for you, Ms. Reggie. I’ll have breakfast for the two of you when you’re done.”

“What about that pot roast I smelled?” Angus asked.

Jo grinned. “You can have lunch right after you have breakfast, if you like.”

“I just might. After I get cleaned up.” Angus smiled at the older woman. “Thank you, Mrs. Jo.”

Reggie’s arm relaxed in Angus’s grip. Halfway down the hall, she spoke. “Thanks. If you hadn’t gotten me out of there, I’m afraid I’d have ripped Lillian’s face off.”

Angus nodded. “She’s not worth it.”

“How can my brother consider marrying someone like that?” She glanced back over her shoulder as if to study the woman in question, who was no longer in sight. “She’s all wrong for him.”

“Perhaps he sees more in her than you do.”

Reggie snorted. “If he’d start thinking with his head instead of his pants, he might figure it out.”

“Love can be blind,” Angus offered.

“And some say too much sex can make you go blind.”

Angus stopped in the middle of the hallway and burst out laughing. “I can’t believe you just said that.”

Her lips twitched at the corner, though she seemed to be fighting the urge to laugh. “Okay, so they said that in high school. If the shoe fits the situation, let it be worn.”

“Go get your bath.” He gave her a gentle push toward her bedroom. “You’ll feel much better about everything when you’re clean and fed.”

“I doubt it,” she grumbled.

Angus stood with his arms folded across his chest until Reggie gave up and entered her bedroom, closing the door behind her.

Angus entered his room, Ranger on his heels. Gathering clean clothing and his toiletries, he crossed the hall to the bathroom, stripped, removed his prosthetic leg and hopped into the shower. Even while making love with Reggie, he hadn’t stripped completely naked.
